GLP-1 pen storage and travel: how long Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound can stay out of the fridge
Per current US labels, keep unused pens in the fridge at 36–46°F (2–8°C) and never freeze them. At up to 86°F (30°C), an in-use Ozempic pen lasts 56 days, a Wegovy single-dose pen up to 28 days, and Mounjaro or Zepbound single-dose pens a total of 21 days. Fly with pens in your carry-on and declare them at security. If a pen froze or overheated, don't use it; ask your pharmacist.
How should you store GLP-1 pens?
All four medicines share the same basics in their US labels: keep unused pens in the refrigerator at 36–46°F (2–8°C), never freeze them, and protect them from heat and light. Where they differ is how long they can live outside the fridge, and that depends on the pen type, not just the drug.
Here is what each label says (US prescribing information and instructions for use, 2026 revisions):
| Pen | Fridge (36–46°F / 2–8°C) | Room temp max | Max time unrefrigerated | Freezing | Light |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ozempic (multi-dose pen) | Before first use (until expiry); optional after | 59–86°F (15–30°C) | 56 days after first use, then discard | Never; don’t use if frozen | Cap on; avoid sunlight and excessive heat |
| Wegovy single-dose pen | Yes | 46–86°F (8–30°C) | Up to 28 days, before the cap comes off | Never; don’t use if frozen | Keep in the original carton |
| Wegovy FlexTouch (multi-dose) | Before first use; optional after | 59–86°F (15–30°C) | 56 days after first use | Never; don’t use if frozen | Cap on; avoid excessive heat and light |
| Mounjaro / Zepbound single-dose pen or vial | Yes | Up to 86°F (30°C) | A total of 21 days, then discard | Never; don’t use if frozen | Keep in the original carton |
| Mounjaro / Zepbound KwikPen or multi-dose vial | Unopened (until expiry); optional after | Up to 86°F (30°C) | 30 days; once opened, also discard after 4 doses or 30 days from first use | Never; don’t use if frozen | Keep in the original carton |
A few details matter in real life:
- Ozempic has no room-temperature allowance for an unused pen in the US label. Start the 56-day clock on the day of your first injection and write the discard date down.
- Wegovy single-dose pens and the newer single-dose prefilled syringes of Ozempic and Wegovy follow a 28-day rule.
- Mounjaro and Zepbound count time at room temperature as a running total of 21 days. Note the date each pen comes out of the fridge.
- You don’t need to warm a pen before injecting; Lilly’s Zepbound pen instructions say it isn’t necessary.
What if your pen froze or got too hot?
Every one of these labels is clear on freezing: do not use a pen that has been frozen, even if it has thawed and looks normal. That includes a pen that sat against the cooling element at the back of a fridge or touched an ice pack directly.
Heat is the other risk. A pen left in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill or in a beach bag can exceed 86°F quickly. Wegovy’s patient information says to throw the pen away if it was exposed to temperatures above 86°F (30°C). For the others, the labels set 86°F as the ceiling and tell you to protect the pen from heat, so if you think it went above that, don’t guess. Call your pharmacist or the manufacturer before you inject.
Also check the medicine itself before each dose. The labels describe the solution as clear and colorless (tirzepatide may be slightly yellow); don’t use it if it’s discolored or has particles. Lilly’s Zepbound pen instructions add that a pen dropped on a hard surface shouldn’t be used, because it contains glass parts.
How do you fly with GLP-1 injections?
Pack pens in your carry-on
The CDC’s travel guidance says medicines belong in hand luggage, not checked bags. A checked bag can be delayed or lost, and you can’t control its temperature. Bring enough pens for the whole trip plus extra for unexpected delays, as long as they stay within the storage windows above.
At TSA security
According to TSA’s current pages:
- Medically necessary liquids, including injectable medicines, are allowed in reasonable quantities above 3.4 oz (100 mL).
- Tell the officer before screening begins and put the medication and its supplies in a separate bin.
- Ice packs, gel packs and freezer packs used for medicine can be presented frozen, partially frozen or melted.
- Unused syringes are allowed when they’re with injectable medication.
- Labels aren’t required, but TSA recommends them to speed things up. You can ask that a medicine not be X-rayed or opened, but expect extra screening, such as a pat-down.
- The officer makes the final decision at the checkpoint.
Keep pens cool, not frozen
An insulated travel case with a cooling pack works well, but don’t let the pen touch the pack directly; wrap it in a cloth or use a case with a separate compartment. If your pen is already within its room-temperature window (an in-use Ozempic pen, for example), staying below 86°F matters more than keeping it cold. In a hotel fridge, keep the pen away from the cooling element at the back, as the Novo Nordisk labels advise.
Bring documentation for international trips
The CDC recommends keeping medicines in their original, labeled containers and carrying a letter from your clinician listing your conditions, medicines (with generic names and doses) and the equipment you need. Some countries restrict certain medicines, so check with the destination’s embassy several weeks before you go.
How do you keep your GLP-1 dose on schedule across time zones?
All four labels say to inject once a week on the same day, at any time of day. Because the time of day is flexible, a time-zone shift of a few hours usually doesn’t need any change; just inject on your usual day wherever you are.
If a long trip means you need to move your injection day, each label sets a minimum gap between the two doses:
- Ozempic and Wegovy: at least 2 days (48 hours) between doses.
- Mounjaro and Zepbound: at least 3 days (72 hours) between doses.
Agree on any change with your prescriber or pharmacist before you leave, and set a reminder in your destination’s local time. A GLP-1 shot tracker with dose reminders makes the new day harder to forget. Rotating sites still matters on the road; our guide to GLP-1 injection sites and rotation covers it.
What if you miss a dose while traveling?
The labels have product-specific rules: Ozempic can be taken within 5 days of the missed dose, Mounjaro and Zepbound within 4 days, and a missed Wegovy injection is taken only if the next dose is more than 2 days away. Otherwise you skip it and return to your usual day. Our guide on what to do after a missed GLP-1 dose walks through each case, and there’s a dedicated missed Wegovy dose guide. Never double up, and if you’ve missed two or more doses in a row, contact your prescriber before restarting.
When should you call your pharmacist or doctor?
- A pen froze, was left in the heat, or went past its room-temperature limit and you have no replacement
- The solution looks discolored or has particles
- You’ve missed two or more weekly doses
- You need to change your injection day and aren’t sure how to do it safely
- You’re traveling abroad and need a letter or a prescription for your destination
Seek urgent care for severe stomach pain that may spread to your back (a possible sign of pancreatitis), signs of dehydration such as dizziness and very little urine, or signs of an allergic reaction such as facial swelling or trouble breathing.
The bottom line
GLP-1 pen storage comes down to a few rules: fridge until you need it, never frozen, never above 86°F (30°C), and a clear limit on time outside the fridge that depends on your pen. On a trip, keep pens in your carry-on, declare them at security, and plan any change to your injection day with your prescriber.
GLPMate can help on the road: dose logs and reminders keep your weekly schedule visible, and the injection-site map helps you keep rotating. This article is educational only and not medical advice; follow your own pen’s instructions and ask your pharmacist or doctor when in doubt.
FAQ
Can Ozempic be out of the fridge?
Once you've started using an Ozempic pen, the US label lets you keep it at 59–86°F (15–30°C) or in the fridge for 56 days, then throw it away even if medicine is left. Before first use, the label says to keep the pen refrigerated. If an unused pen was left out, check with your pharmacist before using it.
How long can Mounjaro or Zepbound stay unrefrigerated?
A Mounjaro or Zepbound single-dose pen or vial can be kept at up to 86°F (30°C) for a total of 21 days, then it should be discarded. KwikPens and multi-dose vials follow a 30-day rule instead. Never freeze them, and keep them in the original carton to protect from light.
Can I bring my GLP-1 pens on a plane?
Yes. TSA allows medically necessary liquids above 3.4 oz in reasonable quantities in your carry-on, along with cooling packs and unused syringes that go with injectable medication. Tell the officer before screening starts and place the items in a separate bin. Keeping pens in your carry-on also protects them from lost bags.
How do I keep my weekly GLP-1 shot on schedule across time zones?
The labels say to inject on the same day each week at any time of day, so a shift of a few hours usually isn't an issue. If travel means changing your injection day, the labels require at least 2 days between doses for Ozempic and Wegovy and at least 3 days for Mounjaro and Zepbound. Plan the change with your prescriber before you go.
