At the **19.5%** average from SURMOUNT-1, a 90 kg start would reach about 72.4 kg — a loss of about 17.6 kg. Your result will differ.

Averages are mean total body-weight change with lifestyle support, at the trial endpoint. They are not a personal forecast.

## Where these averages come from

The percentages are the mean weight change reported in the pivotal randomized trials — applied to your weight only to make the numbers relatable. They describe trial _populations_, not individuals.

Medication | Trial | Avg. weight change | Duration

**Wegovy 2.4 mg**

semaglutide | STEP 1 (NEJM 2021) | −14.9% | 68 wks

**Zepbound 5 mg**

tirzepatide | SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM 2022) | −15% | 72 wks

**Zepbound 10 mg**

tirzepatide | SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM 2022) | −19.5% | 72 wks

**Zepbound 15 mg**

tirzepatide | SURMOUNT-1 (NEJM 2022) | −20.9% | 72 wks

### Why your result will differ

Averages hide a wide spread. In SURMOUNT-1, roughly a third of participants on the higher doses lost 25% or more — while others lost far less. Real-world loss is frequently lower than trials because of side effects, dose interruptions and stopping early. The strongest lever you control is consistency: reaching your dose, eating enough protein, and tracking so you can catch problems early.

### It is not linear

Weight comes off fastest early and slows toward a plateau near the trial endpoint, with stalls and drops along the way. GLPMate's [weight trend](/glp-1-weight-tracker) smooths the daily noise so a normal plateau doesn't read as failure.

FAQ

## Weight-loss questions

### How much weight do people lose on GLP-1 medications?

In the pivotal trials, adults averaged about 14.9% of body weight on semaglutide 2.4 mg (Wegovy, STEP 1) and 15–21% on tirzepatide 5–15 mg (Zepbound, SURMOUNT-1) over roughly 68–72 weeks, alongside diet and activity changes. These are averages — individual results ranged from little or no loss to more than 25%.

### Is this a prediction of what I will lose?

No. This applies a published trial average to your weight to make the scale relatable. It is not a personal prediction and not a promise. Your result depends on dose, adherence, diet, activity, sleep, other medications and your own biology — and some people respond much more or much less than the average.

### Why did trial participants lose more than some real-world users?

Trial participants reached and maintained the full dose with structured lifestyle support and close follow-up. Real-world results are often lower because of side effects, dose interruptions, cost-driven gaps or stopping early. Consistent tracking is one of the few things shown to help — which is exactly what GLPMate is for.

### How fast does the weight come off?

Loss is fastest in the first several months and slows as you approach a plateau near the trial endpoint. It is rarely linear — most people see stalls and whooshes along the way. GLPMate charts your real trend so a normal plateau does not feel like failure.

### What happens if I stop?

Trials (including STEP 4 and SURMOUNT-4) found that most people regain a substantial share of the lost weight after stopping, because the underlying appetite biology returns. GLP-1 therapy is generally long-term — discuss any change with your prescriber.
