Real eligibility depends on your clinician's assessment and your insurer's rules — which are often stricter. ## The GLP-1 eligibility criteria Weight-management GLP-1 medicines (Wegovy, Zepbound) were studied and labeled for adults who meet one of two BMI thresholds: - **BMI ≥ 30** (obesity), on its own; or - **BMI ≥ 27** (overweight) **plus at least one weight-related condition** — type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea or cardiovascular disease. BMI is body weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. In imperial units it's 703 × pounds ÷ inches². The World Health Organization categories: under 18.5 underweight, 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight, 30+ obese. ### Why BMI isn't the whole story BMI can't tell muscle from fat, and thresholds differ for some populations. Insurers frequently add their own requirements — a documented history, a prior diet attempt, or a higher BMI. That's why this is a starting point for a clinician conversation, not a verdict. FAQ ## Eligibility questions ### What BMI do you need to qualify for GLP-1 weight-loss medication? The weight-management GLP-1s (Wegovy, Zepbound) were studied and labeled for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or sleep apnea. This tool checks your BMI against those thresholds. ### Is BMI the only thing that matters? No. BMI is the starting screen, but real eligibility depends on your full medical history, your clinician's judgment and — often the deciding factor — your insurance criteria, which can be stricter. BMI also doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so it's imperfect for very muscular or older bodies. ### What about Ozempic and Mounjaro? Ozempic and Mounjaro are approved for type 2 diabetes, with different criteria (a diabetes diagnosis, not a BMI threshold), though they contain the same drugs as Wegovy and Zepbound. This checker uses the weight-management BMI criteria. Your prescriber will match the right product to your situation. ### My BMI is under 27 — is there any option? Below BMI 27, weight-management GLP-1 is generally not indicated, and insurers won't usually cover it. That said, your clinician considers the whole picture.
